BiPAP Machines
Bilevel positive airway pressure (BiPAP) machines are used to treat individuals with central sleep apnea, mixed sleep apnea, sleep-related hypoventilation or those that require airway support during sleep.
A BiPAP machine in a non-invasive form of sleep therapy. It offers a comfortable night's sleep by allowing a higher rate of air pressure to be delivered through the mask while inhaling, and lower pressure while exhaling.
BiPAP Machine Supplies
BiPAP machines are generally about the size of a toaster. The machine’s motor blows air through a tube, into a face mask, nasal mask or nasal plugs. There are various accessories available for all our sleep therapy machines, and it can change your experience for the better to find the device and face mask that is the right fit for you.
It’s important to use your BiPAP device every night. There are plenty of different travel CPAP machines and portable BiPAP machines available to ensure you can continue your sleep therapy even when away from home.
How Is a BiPAP Machine Different From a CPAP Device?
Whereas a CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) machine offers a constant level of airflow, a BiPAP machine has two different pressure settings - one for inhalation and one for exhalation. BiPAP machines may therefore be recommended by sleep specialists or doctors for a severe level of sleep apnea, or those requiring high levels of airway pressure.
CPAP machines primarily treat obstructive sleep apnea, whereas BiPAP machines are often prescribed for people with central sleep apnea, or mixed sleep apnea. A complaint of some CPAP users requiring a high level of pressurised air is that exhaling against the air can be difficult or uncomfortable. This is where a BiPAP machine may be beneficial, which allows a lower rate of exhalation pressure.
Other Conditions BiPAP May Be Used for
As well as sleep apnea and sleep-related hypoventilation, a BiPAP machine may be recommended for conditions such as:
- Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
- Asthma
- Heart conditions such as congestive heart failure and coronary artery disease
- Poor breathing following a medical procedure
- Other respiratory conditions
